Jam Sandwich. In the beginning.... I was going to call this mix Jam Central Station. Then I thought, Lion Jams, then Jam’itches... Those are all nice but much to clever. “Jams arent clever” I said to my self. “They dont give a shit about you and your clever ass, no one does... ASS!” I was like “Hold it there Mark, dont be so harsh, Jams arent Harsh.” So Yeah. Jam Sandwich. These are actually something i used to eat all the time. I was allergic to Peanuts for awhile, so I just ate, Jelly, or Jam, Preserves and stuff, with bread. I digress, I like to dance and get overly passionate about lots of things. Mainly, the economy, good food stuffs, conspiracies and Jams. To me, a Jam is a track that needs to be played a few times a week for any number of reasons. Life could be life-ing, happy times, boredom, in need of pick-me-ups, etc. Ultimately they get played a lot. You got Bangin Jams, Slow Jams, Jams, Super Jams, “Lion” Jams, My Jams, Jammie Jams, bamalam jams, so forth and so on. Here are my fave jams. Some are all time faves, some are recent finds, some just showed up on the list and may not even be a.... Naw, naw, NO. They all Jams.
1.) Natural Yogurt Band - Clocks: This is ex-Little Barrie drummer Wayne Fullwood and producer & musician Miles Newbold. They want to be obscure on some hipster shit. Im cool with that. I dont know anything else about these guys except that they fall into my category of likes for today's offerings. They Jam. Optimal when loud. Discovered these guys recently while up late. State of mind cant be confirmed but I believe I was half in bed and half somewhere else. This song took that half that was in bed and joined the other half @ somewhere else. Location unknown. But apparently its been confirmed that I jammed.
Heavy Jam.
2.) The Moments - Girls. YEA! Duh.. this is totes Jam material. It’s actually a collabo from The Moments & the Whatnot's. They were both kinda unsuccessful until years after this song. The lead singer changed the bands name like five times. You probably have heard some of the other incarnations. I first heard an excerpt of this on a Soul Position album. Never knew the original track until I started to dig. The first 10 seconds of the track have been in my head for at least 2 years. Kinda like a Haunting Jam, Ghost Jam if you will. Consider this my therapeutic release. Plus you can wiggle to it, AKA Jam out.
Haunty Ghost from the Past Jam.
3.) Sanae Petchaboon - Pen Jung Dai: I found this super dopish album called Sounds of Siam. It’s a collection of 60’s and 70’s Thai Music. Damn I wish I new what they were gibber jabbering about. Probably calling people out for not Jamming. Listen, seriously... Dude stops the music and is like, “Hey you bastard! What the cuss are u doin not Jammin?” (in Thai of course). What a great last name on this guy too, huh? I recommend grocery shopping to this tune. International Thai Jam.
4.) James Pants - Tale of a Whale: AHHH! I love Mr. Pants. A few years back I stumbled across a Stones Throw Records Podcast, Sounds of the Forest.. I think that’s what it’s was called. Psychedelic Jammie Jams. Anyway this is also good for grocery shopping.
Psychedelic Jam.
5.) The Meters - Stretch Your Rubber Band. I dont know if I’ve ever heard a song from this New Orleans Legendary band that wasn't a Jam. “Every thing I do is Funky Like Lee Dorsey”
- Beastie Boys, Sure shot. If you remember that line, its probably because of the Meters that the Beastie Boys said this. The Meters were Eff’n influential to a plethora of groups and even played as the backup band for a few other, now famous, artists included Lee Dorsey.
Funky Histortic Jam.
6.) Natural Yogurt Band - Egg & Spoon: Hate to sweat the proverbial balls but y’all needs to get this whole album. Gritty, Dawnish, Incense Intellectual, Thumpy, Groove pop, Pithy Jam?
7.) Michael Jackson - Billie Jean (Home Demo From 1981): Cant really say much else. Its MJ. Respect it. This is apparently a demo version... He doesn't know how the chorus goes just yet, and the beat is a lil’off and I love it. Demo Jam.
8.) Spirit - Mr. Skin - I was at P.F. Chang’s in Miami, and this came on. I was in hunter gather mode cause I had released my 1st mix only weeks before and I was keeping my ears peeled for new material. This is by far my fave Jam for this album. Monster Jam!! Or maybe a Jammie Jam. Either way, I always have this on repeat. SHiiiiiiiiit!
9.)Doobie Brother’s/ MF Doom / Stupid Alien - Mandrake(remix) - So this was inspired by Mr. Shakey. In his last mix he had J. Rockwell rapp’n over this beat and thats most def been my Jam since it came out. And while diggin for info about Mike Waxx (the dude that mashed it up) I fell on this youtube vid with this dude dressed as an alien playing the gee-tar over the Mandrake track... Shits I love this Jam. This is an Eye Brow Jam (Makes you wrinkle your forehead while listening, might even help you resurect that ole’ air guitar. Thank you Mr. Shakey. This ones for you. Oh and the Doobie Brothers. Love y’all. I repeat. “Eye Brow Jams”
10.) A1 - LeVar Burton. Yeah squitches. LeVar is God. This my Tribute Jam. I felt it didnt really fit in any particular place but if there is such a thing as a Tribute Jam... this was needed.
11.) Cee Lo - Fool For You: If Cee Lo shit on a plate and gave it to me, I’d say thank you Cee Lo. I just don't feel as if this cat can do wrong. I know, I know.. I’m sure there are things that you all dont like about him.. But damn. Im always impressed. His latest album, Lady Killers, is reeeelly good. A few tracks can be skipped but all in all I’m in love with it. Give a few listens. This glorious mother fucker is a beast!
Love Jam.
12.) Pharcyde - (Skit) - Uhhh.. this aint even a song, but its a bang’n beat.
Random Banger Short Jam.
13.) James Pants - Every Night I Dream: Boo’yah. Another “Heavy Jam”. Love the Pants. Off the newest album. Aint out yet.. so stop lookn! Also an album that you may want to pick up. But You cant get it yet, so stop lookn! Did I say that already? This is a Heavy Lion Jam. ROAR you pancakes! ROAR!!!
14.) The Stepkids - Shadows on Behalf: Stones Throw Records just signed these guys. Kinda hipster-beach jam’ish. This is the least Jammie of all the tracks on the mix, but still a jam. For internal use only. If I find out any of you are roaming the streets blasting this one, well, I’ll be flattered but I will be sure and give you a harsh buffalo eye before I hug you if we ever meet. Lo-fi Hipster Jam.
15.) Bruce Haack - Electrictometurn: K, so this guy is apparently the 1st to really open up the electronic genre... IN THE 70’s!!!! Yeah. These were found not to long ago in somebodies basement under a stack of Archie Comics? They remastered them and put it out there.
Weird Electro Dust Pop Jam.
16.) Deep Purple - Mandrake Root: Another random find while diggin for Mike Waxx stuff. Blame Shakes. This is a live performance on some Scottish television show. Very out there. very random. Kinda annoying at times. But hold out... I think you’ll enjoy. Nice way to end it all. DONT PULL THE TRIGGER... Just listen.
I’ll call this the Cliche Epic End Jam.
Rinse and Repeat,
Jam Sandwich
