Songs From Friends

Mix by Josh

Download: Songs From Friends

Apologies for the songs you’ve heard from me before.  Apologies if you didn’t make the cut.  Apologies for being late.  Apologies if I didn’t list your greatest contribution to my listening pleasures.  Apologies.

 1. Talking Heads    Stay Up Late
Tim Parshall, my dad, put this on a mix he made for me when I was like six.
 2. Beck    Nitemare Hippy Girl
I’m going to credit this one to friend Jackie O’Brien, who was way into Beck in 8th grade.
 3. A Tribe Called Quest    I Left My Wallet in El Segundo
Josh Fairman, in his car, 10th grade.
 4. Built to Spill    Big Dipper
Sam D’Agostino taught me this, probably before I ever heard the recording.
 5. Ween    Piss Up a Rope
Danny Dunne used to play this one in the living room of the cottage.
 6. Max Romeo    Wet Dream
May have heard this before Kent Domas put it on a mix, but it’ll always remind me of him.
 7. Donny Hathaway    Jealous Guy
Liz Foley had an extra copy of the Soul Sides compilation.  God bless her.
 8. Allen Toussaint    Soul Sister
I’ve never even met Betsy _________, but her March 2006 mix changed lives.  LIVES.
 9. Jens Lekman    The Cold Swedish Winter
    Thanks to Allan Fieldhouse.
10. Bert Jansch    A Little Sweet Sunshine
Andy Shapero just dumps gigs on me sometimes.  I dug out the Bert Jansch and it stuck.
11. The Kinks    Australia
Helena Safron is a great radio wing-person.  She pulled this for me from the WXYC stacks.
12. The Tornados    Telstar
Dave Wetzel makes some of the best mixes.  This could have been anything.
13. David Crosby    Traction in the Rain
Mike Taylor is a friend from folklore school.  An endless source for folky/noodly/mellow gold.
14. Bill Evans Trio    My Foolish Heart
Fritz Schenker.  I only listen to Bill Evans and Mingus.  That’s (almost) all the jazz I need.
15. The Showmen    39-21-40 Shape
Brendan Greaves (and Mike T.) put together a great mix of beach music.
16. Juneco y Su Combo    El Brujo
Roomies Jeff and Lauren were really into the Masters of Chicha comp.  Great choice.
17. Gerry Rafferty    Right Down the Line
Cooper has weird taste, but this song is perfect.
18. Andrew Jacob Holm    Midwestern Black Earth
Got a copy of this disc from Dom C. on the weekend of Fieldhouse’s wedding.
19. Hall & Oats    Kiss on My List
Alli Goldman finally got me on the H&O bandwagon.  She’s the best.
20. Billy Stewart    Summertime
7th grade English teacher and music guru Phil Overeem showed me the light on this one.

Baths is incredible too- hadn't heard any before but now I'm all like, "I'd illegally download their last album."
