If you buy a girl a drink, but you take the first sip

Mix by Mason

This mix includes some of my favorite hip-hop tracks that I am usually reluctant to share, but after listening to many of your mixes I realized they will be well received.  In keeping with my life, this mix is eclectic, at times emotional, momentarily sobering, nostalgic, and often feelgood as well.  Importantly, in this write-up you’ll find links for the direct download of a few tracks using a new website that I found which does not require you to create an account, etc. like Dropbox.

The Lab Rats – Float
“Float like a feather, freefall forever let whatever be whatever together we all become heavenly.”  The album Half Full Ashtrays, Half Empty Glasses is full of gems.  You must listen to the account of the MC’s acid trip on the track The Devil’s Train and the heavy and amazingly emotive story of his experiences with his father in Failure.

Dapayk & Padberg – Island Feat. Caro (Noze Remix)

Milkman – Let’s Go
Algorithms, Lactose and THC, and Circle of Fifths are three albums by Milkman, probably a white guy with undoubtedly sick rhythm.  David Chan can be thanked.  I enjoy his stuff more than Hood Internet or Girltalk by far.  If you want to get the albums through Dropbox e-mail me (masediggs@gmail.com).

Himalayan Project – Cool With Us
Old school Bay Area hip-hop I think.  “If you came into the club when you was already drunk, that’s cool with us, cool with us.  If you buy a girl a drink but you take the first sip, yeah that’s cool with us, cool with us.”

Jenny Owen Youngs – Fuck Was I (Morgan Page Remix)
Gotta love a song that acknowledges the anthem we all sing so often: “What the fuck was I thinking.”  And, “if we weren’t such good friends I’d wish you were dead.” J

The Head and The Heart – Sounds Like Hallelujah
“I’m not walkin’ away, I’m just hearin’ what you’re sayin’ for the first time.”  The whole self-titled album is really great.  Every track has great lyrics.

Adrian Louis – The Fine Printing On The Label Of A Bottle Of Non-Alcohol Beer
Poem read by author Adrian Louis.  Powerful.

Eliot Lipp – The Outside (Mux Mool Remix)
When this track hits 0:57 I pretty much forget where I am and all the people in the room dissolve into the music.  More free downloads on his website www.eliotlipp.com

Tallest Man On Earth – Love Is All
This track brings tears to my eyes almost every time I listen to it.  I’m not even sure I understand the lyric: “Here come the tears, but like always, I let them go.”  But it feels so right.  If I in some way represent all of historical humanity, which I entertain that I do, then this song strikes a chord that rings eternal, touches on sentiments that humans have felt for millions of years.

Daft Punk – Something About Us
I suggest you all lay down a little bit of freestyle during this song, you never know what you’ll get…

Milkman – Breaking Free
For those of you who like to get the fuck down!

James Yuill – This Sweet Love (Prins Thomas)

ALO – Wasting Time
One has to know how to let the waiting fill.  Not that I know anything about the things he’s singing about.  “Just got a sack weighin’ 3.5” what does that even mean?

Keller Williams – got no feathers (featuring john scofield, victor wooten & jeff sipe)
The lyrics have always interested me.  Victor Wooten rips it through the whole song, and Scofield and Sipe are just brilliant.  “I thrive avoiding drastic measures, I cannot fly, because I got no feathers.”  This album, dreams, is my favorite because it’s a lot of collaborations.  Check out Cadillac (with Bob Wier), RestraintPeople Watching. and

Radiohead – Packed Like Sardines In A Crushed Box
Pay heed to this advice: Best with a good stereo or set of headphones with good bass (not the fish).

The Head and The Heart – Lost In My Mind

Mary Chapin Carpenter – Why Walk When You Can Fly
“It’s a long enough life to be livin’, why walk when you can fly?”

Mike Posner – Cooler Than Me (Gigamesh Remix)
Thanks Dan Smith, whose mix comes out in a few months, you should all look forward to it.
