Hero, Protagonist

Mix by David,

Hello and thanks for welcoming me to CD Club!  This is my first submission, as well as the first time I’ve ever put some sort of effort into making a playlist.  I admit it was surprisingly difficult but fun nonetheless!

My concept for this album was to see if I could build a soundtrack for a heroic action movie that you would watch in your mind.  I tend to visualize random things when I listen to music, so I thought if I strung some songs together in a specific order, they might be able to act as vehicles for characters in a mental movie.  If you’re interested, I invite you to get creative and imaginative, and let the music take control of characters in your mind and see what happens.  Below are some (admittedly cheesy) prompts for how you could picture particular scenes of this epic/tragic/heroic action movie.  Feel free to ignore them as you wish.  Either way, I hope you find some gems in this album, and apologies to those who have heard these tracks before.

Tootles for now, and enjoy :D !

1.  Lykke Li - Melodies & Desires - Opening credits. Take a deep breath. Get comfortable, get intimate, see where this rabbit hole takes you...

2.  Woodkid - Iron - Introduction of the villain and tragedy; the fight, flight, and fall of a friend.  Dig the taiko drums.  Found this here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wo6Q14vBB1c

3.  Miami Horror - I Look To You - Introduction of the setting and the good guy.  Short, quick clips of city life: a bayside commute, sitting at park benches, kids playing in the street, yelling food vendors … or just ignore all of that and enjoy how much of a babe Kimbra is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jna2r56EXTg

4.  Janelle Monae - Tightrope - Recruitment of the crew, absolutely in montage form.

5.  John Heart Jackie - When You Were Mine - Lamenting a long lost love.  Got to see these guys perform this sweet Prince cover live at my coffee shop.

6.  Phantogram - Don’t Move - While wondering and wandering, the plot unfolds.  Love this track. (Both a statement and a command).

7.  Darondo - Didn’t I - A lonely walk, and thinking.  From the end of Breaking Bad - Season 1 - Episode 4 - “Cancer Man” : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GI4rwSqrEk

8.  Vitamin String Quartet - Where Is My Mind? - A glimpse of clarity?  Saw this commercial, enjoyed the take on this classic song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_QLguHvACs

9.  Queens of the Stone Age - Medication - The scene where the hero kicks some serious ass. A throwback!

10.  Justin Vernon & Aaron Dessner - Big Red Machine - Long dream sequence.  From “Last Minutes with Oden”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOAcRKZxjy4  .  Watch this one by yourself.  Trust me.

11.  Sharon Van Etten - Serpents - Transitions.  Ah, Sharon.  If you haven’t yet, go listen to her latest album, Tramp.  It’s a treat.

12.  Miike Snow - Pretender - Gear up!

13.  DeVotchKa - How It Ends - The ultimate suicide/martyr anthem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL_ZjJgbDmc

14.  Kaskade - Turn It Down - The final fight.  Think monologues, explosions, and anguished yelling.

15.  Sigur Ros - Hoppipolla - Resurrection and joyful reconciliation, the ultimate epic movie ending song.  Fun fact: “Hoppipolla” means “jumping into puddles.”  For true.

16.  2Pac - Thugz Mansion (Acoustic) - Ending credits, cuz every ghetto needs a thugs mansion.

Album title reference:  The main character in the great cyber punk novel, Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson was named “Hiro Protagonist” .  Go read this book and rejoice.

Love,
Chan
