July 2011

Mix by Parshall

I don’t have much to say about themes or the selection process.  It’s just some tunes, you guys.
1. Everybody’s Free - Aquagen feat. Rozalla
Opening track of Venture Bros. Season Two.
2. Night Fishin’ - Bobby Rush
I guess catfish are nocturnal?
3. Cause I’m a Man - P Reno
From the unreleased soundtrack of Dawn of the Dead, apparently.
4. If I Were a King - Joe Bataan
Joe continues to impress me.  This is a sleeper off of St. Latin’s Day Massacre.
5. Dream Operator - Talking Heads
True Stories is a seriously underrated movie, in my awesome opinion.
6. Hot Love - T. Rex
Medium.  Rock.  Shuffle.
7. Warm Heart of Africa - The Very Best (w/ Ezra Koenig)
I should look this up on allmusic.com and then tell you something about it.
8. Knocka, Knocka - The I Love You But I’m Not In Love With You’s
A gem of a DIY album, put out by high school friends in 2003.
9. Did it Before - Lil Wayne
People seem to enjoy Lil Wayne.
10. Sailing Around the World - M Coast
A jaunty one for the kids.
11. I Want to Show You - Wee
Did I mention that I like my jams sweet and CHEE-ZEE?
12. Let’s Go (It’s Summertime) - James Reese and the Progressions
This is from the Carolina Funk compilation curated by Jason Perlmutter, now co-creator of Paradise of Bachelors (paradiseofbachelors.com).
13. Have You Seen Her? - The Chi-Lites
See my comment under “I Want to Show You.”
14. Magnificent Obsession - Lambchop
After two years of loving this tune, I still don’t know anything it.  Or I forgot.
15. Bad Luck City - R. L. Burnside
These songs have some pretty good guitar playing in them.  I’m having a guitar loving renaissance, I guess.
16. Cover Ears - The Rosebuds
Jordan Parshall likes this band, a divorced duo plus auxiliary players.  Divorced!  We saw them in Oxford, MS, a few weeks ago, and it was good.  They played with a great band out of Oklahoma, Other Lives.
17. Country Road - The Pretty Things
They say that Freeway Madness is a weak album for the Pretty Things, but this track suits me just fine.
18. I Will Not be Your Fool - David Bromberg
It’s an angry one, and I don’t totally approve of the language, but he’s funny, ya know?
19. The Death of Sonny Boy Williamson - Peck Curtis
Sometimes you just need to tell your story, talk it out.
